From Friday 22nd April 1983 we have added several hours of recordings from both Sunshine Radio and Radio Nova. All recordings were made from medium wave in North West England.  The final 6 hour John Lewis 'All Night Nova' is included in its entirety. On Sunshine mid morning are Stevie Dunne followed by 4 hours of Tony Fenton.

Added 6 hours of John Lewis with an 'All Night Nova' between midnight and 6am from 1st March 1983. Also included is the end of Jason at midnight and start of Declan's breakfast show at 6am. The recording was made from 819kHz in North West England.

Added a few minutes of airchecks of Radio Greenhills as received with a bit of crackling on 200m in Lancashire, and which was on the air for the Greehills Creative Youth Festival in late May 1985. The station was broadcasting courtesy of Boyneside Radio. The transmitter would be used the following week for Breakaway Radio from the Balbriggan Festival.

Added 12 hours of Radio Nova audio from the afternoon and evening of Easter Monday 11th April 1982 when the station was broadcasting a 'Beatles Bonanza' special.  The recordings were all made from 846kHz in North West England.

Added around 8 hours of recordings from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 1983 as received in Lancashire, when Radio Nova was operating on 819kHz with the 50kW transmitter. Shows are from Tony Fenton, Tom Hardy, Greg Gaughran and Bob Gallico, with David Malone reading the news, seemingly throughout Christmas.

As it is 40 years ago, we have added a couple of recordings from December 1981.  These show the difficulty of AM reception at distance during the winter months. The stations are Big D Radio (1116kHz) and Island Radio (1314kHz).

Three stations from County Dublin recorded near Blackpool during an FM lift in July 1997.  This was 9 years after legislation when stations were starting to operate with longer hours once more.  Spectrum closed soon after this recording, but would return to the air as Phantom FM later in the year.

Some further recordings have now been added, again mainly from stations outside the Dublin area.  The recordings are of variable quality as some were recorded at some distance from the transmitters.

Radio Snowflake was a station which operated during the festive seasons of the 1980s. Added a couple of stereo recordings from January 1987.

It was noticed that a lot of recordings related to the early part of 1984 jamming and frequency changes, had been 'hidden'.  These have now been added to the 'downloads' page.

Two, three hour FM stereo recordings of Q102 and Radio Nova from a Saturday in October 1985. On Q102, listen to Jason Maine followed by John Kenny with the afternoon 'sports' programme.  Later in the evening Tony Lewis hosts on Radio Nova with Mike Duggan after midnight.

Three different types of stations were recorded near Blackpool this particular Friday in 1985. Magic 103 was the easy listening station in Dublin at that time and added is two hours of Peter Madison and Bob Gallico. WLCB was the community radio station for Wicklow and we have included almost two hours of Kathy Quinn during Wicklow Regatta.  Boyneside Radio was the regional station for the North East and we have added over two hours of an early evening show from Elaine Taylor.

March 2020 saw the 40th anniversary of Radio Caroline's final broadcast from the Mi Amigo.  Here are a few recordings recently discovered from the week or so before the sad sinking of the Mi Amigo.

Merseyside Music Radio was a short lived spinoff from MAR in the summer of 1980 operated by Bert Williams.  Here are are a few off-air recordings.

After no updates for 3 years, this is hopefully the first of a new series

MAR celebrated its 40th birthday in October 2019, and we have now updated our history of their first 2 years with a large number of off-air recordings and other items.

Added an entry in the pop up / mouse over menu for Record Mirror pages.

Still haven't really thought much about the pop up menu system in relation to touch screens, eg phones.

After quite a lot of preparation, a page is now added for Record Mirror scans, mainly from the time it was called Record and Radio Mirror. There are many gaps, though these gaps are closing up gradually.

After a long break of activity here due to work commitments, some new Cork recordings have been added that came via IB, many of which were Anoraks Ireland tapes. Some were originals which were sold off when Anoraks Ireland folded..

As they are all Cork recordings mainly from 1982, 83 and 86 so far, they are all on the Cork audio page.

New 2017 is in blue beside the newer files.

Added 6 Energy 103 recordings from GH, and some Nova from 1982 (4), one Nova from 83, and one more from the last day in 1986, all via the collection of GH.

Added 9 recordings of ABC and CBC Cork courtesy of Pat Healy from 1978. These are really early days of the Cork Pirates, and much appreciated. Also a couple of early CBC promotional items courtesy of Patrick.

Added another ERI and South Coast recording from 29/30th October 82 courtesy of GH.

These new recordings are indexed on Cork download page at the moment but next major update we shall copy links to audio files to the various stations home pages as well..... Currently some South Coast stuff is in the Cork page and other downloads in the main Irish download listing.

Updated the WLCB / Wicklow Community Radio pages with another recording found in the collection of DS.

Updated the Radio Nova family of radio stations with another forgotten call sign. Zoom 103, used briefly pre Energy 103!! Well done to GH for finding all the recordings in his extensive archives.

Also added a KISS FM sticker, and audio file.

Added Energy 103 stickers, and leaflets and a pdf of a sort of a newsletter thing. Poor quality.

Tweaked the Nova bouquet of stations and offshoots pages a little.

Added a couple of old manky press cuttings of Nova in 1981.

Generally began to tidy up the Nova downloads page a little, so that all the other off shoots of Nova are separated from the main Nova downloads.

We can also expect some text from Energy / Zoom era soon, and perhaps where the Nova power 103 era fits in to the history as well.

Updated the WLCB / Wicklow Community Radio pages and added a collection of various photos and promotional material to hand, and an audio tape.

5th April - Further recordings of WLCB and Viking 105 added......

Tony Allan 1st day of Viking 105 added. A couple of file dates fixed that were dated wrong. All ok.

Added a few recordings from Dave Small from 1979. Those are LRD Drogheda, Capitol Dublin 220m, and a Big D recording from 1979.

Also added a dx signal heard in Scotland from Capitol Radio Dublin 220m, and one from Capital Radio Cork from January 1982, when a loop tape was running overnight. Note spelling on Dublin station.

Added recordings of Radio City Dublin, ICBS test transmission 1982, Kildare Community Radio sign on, and CRF first days broadcast, from GH collection.

New pages made for ABC Dublin (Parnell Street), Capitol Radio Dublin (1978 version), ICBS and CRF which never had a page on the a/z index. New pages were added recently for ABC Cork, Caroline Cork and maybe one or two more.....

Much of the Cork audio material uploaded recently still has to be indexed on the main Irish Downloads index page.

Note: Why is it every time I look for my 1981 photos, I end up re scanning the bloody lot. The rescans seem to be forever disappearing..!!!

Geez, GH has added an amazing number of hours to his April 1982 visit to Dublin, and the Sunshine recordings. They are not quite continous, prob due to the bar being open???? lol..

Also found an unlinked to file from 1984 with Dave Lyons and Cathy Cregan....

All the recent additions are marked in red as new Feb 2016..

Finally added the clip about Mi Amigo sinking from BBC as mentioned a few days ago. Forgot to upload the audio clip....

When working on the site again after a couple of years, a series of recordings were found from reel, recorded in Dublin by GH on holiday in 1987. The quality is very good for 30 year old recordings.

There is also a couple of tests of early Sunshine in 1980, which were in the same folder, and unlinked. So now they are all available.

There is also another long recording from 1982 with Johnnie Lewis in lovely 91.6 FM stereo.

While looking for orphaned files and bad links in general, I found a poor attempt by BBC Radio 1 at humour in connection with Caroline's ship shinking in 1980.

Updated ABC Waterford with a 2 hour good stereo recording of a station tour on the last day. Source poss Jolly Joe?? This for the last day which was 29th December, not the 30th, which is listed in Rodney's tapes.

Edited some links on the 1988 closedown page, as some of the links were dead. Should be all right now. Very sad page but historically intersting. Thanks to GH for his hard work compiling this page.

Added the EXIDY page that had gone a stray in updating. This was compiled by Gary in 2014, commemorating 30 years since the one day only EXIDY broadcast. Lots of new long recordings of Nova and of course the EXIDY broadcast.

Also linked in Magic, KISS, Energy, Nova and Exidy pages, all the Nova offshoots.

Added a few more audio files from Community Radio Youghal which Gary recorded while attending a wedding in Ballycotton, Co Cork in 1988.

More work is being done on the site, so bear with us.

Mike Richardson of Big L in Limerick has supplied a web link with some superb text and history of Big L.

Also there are higher res images and some new shots that have never seen the light of day on the BIG L home page.

After a long period of low activity here, some updates were made to the 1980's Irish pirate pages. This was encouraged by contributions, and of learning of various web links.

Community Radio Youghal have some videos on YOUTUBE, and linked via the Youghal on line web pages. There was much discussion about the old days when their MW signal travelled well out into Europe.

There is now a fairly reasonable collection of recordings available on the CRY pages, some recorded at night on 1512 in Scotland, but anyway they are of much historical value.

Expanded the Scottish pages by adding a Radio Mercury page. This was a Glasgow FM station.

Also created a new PDF listing which will be expanded in the coming weeks. This is linked via our "other" menu.

Added 5 recordings from early Nova, mainly recorded in Scotland bar the 1/1/82 tape I think. The dates are 29th June 82, 16th May 82, 3rd March 82, 19/8/81 (rec in Dublin)

A few more to come from that time and then I believe all the recordings in the archives of early Nova will be on line. Of course more are welcome.

Added the rest of the set of large Sunshine Radio newspapers / reviews from 1983, as well as the 5th ann large style book. So all the Sunshine Review's, 1 - 4 are now downloadable as pdf's. The files sizes are kept quite high, to preserve quality.
