MERSEYSIDE AM LISTINGS, COMPILED BY GARY

The following list includes stations heard from 1979 through until the early 1990's. Little is known of stations or their frequencies earlier than this, although there were certainly some on the air in the early 1970's, including Radio Free Liverpool, Radio Ronda and Radio Tower.

Between 1979 and 1983, the list was compiled from personal loggings in Leeds and visits to the area. From 1983 to 1989 the comprehensive Merseyside Reports of Tim Jackson and the Anoraks U.K. Weekly Report provided the majority of the information.

This list is by no means 100% correct, and stations may have been missed or named incorrectly. During the mid - 1980's, FM began to take over as the preferred transmission type (due mainly to better quality, more compact transmitters and easier to install transmission sites), and this resulted in fewer new AM stations. Unfortunately the change to FM also meant that only the very strong stations were audible outside Merseyside, whereas on AM a station using as little as 1 watt could be heard at 50 miles with a good loop aerial.  (Current example is the Everton football station on 1602kHz) The last big AM station heard at this location was North Coast Radio (1350kHz) in January 1992. The most powerful signal we ever heard was a test from Burt Williams on 1188kHz around 1991.
