In mid September 1984, test transmissions were heard on 977kHz from a
new Merseyland Alternative Radio. This incarnation
appeared to be being operated by John Dwyer and Rick Dane and intended
to operate seven days per week, 7am to 7pm. The tests
were initially heard on the mid-channel
frequency of 977kHz, although the pre-recorded tapes were announcing
as 819kHz. The frequency had changed to the announced
819kHz by the following weekend, and full broadcasts were announced as
commencing on 1st October 1984. A Post Office Box in Moreton was announced
for advertisers.
Tests continued every day of the week, and the new Merseyland
Alternative Radio did indeed commence daily 7am to 7pm broadcasts on
1st October 1984 as promised. John Dwyer and Rick Dane were the only
two presenters heard alternating throughout those first weeks. John Dwyer was usually heard
signing on at 7am and Rick Dane was heard closing the station each day
at 7pm. The schedule ran for three weeks until the station
suddenly disappeared at the end of October. It was not reported heard again
until tests on 819kHz were heard in late November 1984, and then re-commenced programmes on Monday
3rd December with a new deejay 'Dave' (apparently Dave Asher) being heard
on breakfast in addition
to John and Rick. From this point, the deejays were only giving
first names. According to a report from Tim Jackson, on
Wednesday 5th December at 5pm, Rick was asking John to call the studio
urgently. The station disappeared soon after and was not heard again.
The station demise could well have been due to heavy DTI activity at
that time, as
another 7 day station Storeton Community Radio were raided the following day. |
