Radio Telstar North, Station X and Station J1000 were probably consecutive incarnations of the same station judging by the frequencies used and deejays heard.  Radio Telstar North seemed to be on the air first during the early Summer of 1981 on around 271m (1107kHz) and 241m (1242kHz).  By early August a station was heard on the same frequencies calling itself Station X, which a few weeks later appeared to be renamed Station J1000, and using a set of US radio station jingles. 1107kHz was an unusual pirate frequency at the time, but handily adjacent to BBC Radio 1, and which would also be chosen by the offshore station Radio Paradise on 28th July 1981. Telstar North were probably unaware of the surprise tests from this offshore station, and as a result Radio Paradise was difficult to hear at times in the North West during its two days of test transmissions before the ship was raided and towed to Holland by the authorities.  Station J1000 continued until just before Christmas 1981 when they announced the last broadcast of 1981.  It was announced the station would be back on 3rd January 1982, but we don't have any recordings, although they were reported broadcasting on 97.5MHz FM only in the early part of 1982.  The signal on 1107kHz covered quite a large area and was heard as far away as Scotland.  Unfortunately, whilst there are recordings, we have no memorabilia from these stations in our collection.

1981_07_00_thu_telstar_north_1233am_244m_0140-0225_andydavis_jimmywalsh-rd.mp3 New Apr 2024 An early morning broadcast from Radio Telstar North in July 1981 when it was announcing as 1233kHz. Andy Davis and Jimmy Walsh were the presenters. Andy announced that the station would soon be moving to 1107kHz and be crystal controlled. This recording was made when the station was using a vfo, and sudden shifts in frequency can be occasionally heard. This also caused a heterodyne whistle which varied in intensity. The recording is courtesy of Rodger Dee. 43MB

The quality of this recording suffers from two issues.  Firstly, the tape is very poor quality and muffled. Secondly,  according to Andy Davis at the 1pm announcement, due to high winds, one of the temporary aerial wires had dropped onto the live aerial, causing a lot of cutting out of the signal. Recorded from 1107kHz near Blackpool, with some electrical interference.  40MB

As we have no printed memorabilia for Station J1000, we thought the images below of what appear to be the original cassettes of all three hours  of the final Rockin Robin Show' might be of interest.  They include instructions for the tape change at the end of each hour, and there does seem to be confusion as to the spelling of his name.
