Red Nose Radio was a one off FM station from Merseyside in support
of the second Red Nose Day, now better known as Comic Relief. It broadcast on 104.9MHz on Friday 10th March 1989.
The original plan was concocted by staff at North Coast Radio and
Radio Merseywaves and the transmissions were to be on two medium
wave (presumably 1350kHz and 1242kHz) and one FM channel. Due
to the unavailability of the AM transmitters, the station eventually only
broadcast on FM, apparently in mono with about 70 watts which
commenced at 0300 on Friday morning with DLC (Dave Collins). The
signal got out quite well and the recordings below were all made
near Blackpool on the edge of its transmission range, hence some fading and crackling. Red Nose Radio continued until the early hours of
Saturday morning, finally signing off after Tony Simmons, with Dave Collins at 0210. The station used 'Popcorn' by Hot Butter as its theme tune. |
