Below
are the front covers of two of the applications to the Radio Authority
from which Radio Jackie hoped to be granted a license for the South
West London area. The left cover was from the 1984 application.
The right was from June 1985. Note that the wavelength was missing
from the second cover, as this was produced after the station was forced
to close down on 4th February 1985. At the point of closure,
the station had been operating a 7 day schedule for a couple of years.
The DTI were forced to act after complaints from a new ILR station in
Crawley were received, even though the coverage of the two stations
did not overlap!!! After years of building a listener base
and all the hard work put into these applications, Radio Jackie failed
to obtain a license. This was despite much support from local
MP's and organisations. A similar fate became a station called
Calderdale Sound in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. They were raided
in October 1984, and again, despite support from local MP's and promises
from the authorities of being one of the first areas to be offered a
'community license', Todmorden still has not been issued a full time
license. Calderdale Sound has operated several RSL's recently
to try and revive everything. Perhaps it's only money that
counts to the Radio Authority and not enthusiasm, or is it just 'not
what you know, but who you know'?? |
