RADIO KAY - 1413kHz

Radio Kay was set up in the summer of 1981 with the help of a group campaigning against nuclear power. Its intention was to oppose the new Torness Nuclear Power Station near Dunbar, East Lothian. The station transmitted from that area with the help of local farmers who provided land for the aerial and even a convent who were strongly opposed to the power station.

Alan Kidd remembers the transmitter was fitted with a couple of 813 valves that ran nicely at 500 watts on 1413 kHz. He recalls the transmitter being tested from the Radio Freedom International site and receiving a strong signal some three miles away. He was surprised to learn that at that point the transmitter was being loaded into the element from a domestic iron!

Here is a recording of Radio Kay on 5th July 1981. It was made in East Ayrshire some 80 miles from the transmitter, hence quality is poor.
