RADIO CAROLINE SOUTH - 217m

Radio Caroline South started transmissions in 1971 and broadcast on Sundays between 1200-2000 as well as Saturday night transmissions from 2300-0100.
Their frequency was 1394 kHz, 217 metres using powers between 80 and 200 watts. The higher power was usually kept for the late night broadcasts.
The station originators were Mike Scott and Tim Welsh.

The station was set up to give the people of Edinburgh and surrounds something of what they missed, ie the sound of the original Radio Caroline. The station used the original Caroline jingles and the theme tune by The Fortunes.

The station also had plans to broadcast on the 48 metre band, but as far as we know no transmissions were made. However, one of the dj's, Alan Kidd, later went on to set up Radio Freedom International on short wave.

During 1972 some of the station staff left and joined up with Radio Scotland to form the well know Radio Caroline Scotland.

Radio Caroline South did continue and the last report we have of it is from early 1973 broadcasting on 1388 kHz on Sundays from 1200 to past 1800.

The aircheck below features Tim Welsh on what seems to be a daily Breakfast Show running from 0700-0830 in February 1972. Not sure how long this service lasted. Thanks to Alan Kidd for the recording.
