PIRATE RADIO IN COUNTY DONEGAL

DONEGAL C0MMUNITY RADIO (1980)

DCR was heard in the UK at night on 1410kHz, off channel. This was during the summer months of 1980. One log which has been questioned but sadly can't be backed up by a recording, is reception one night in July 1980 on 1615kHz. This is logged as a test transmission from Donegal Community Radio. Sadly the cassette was not running at the time and it was never heard again. Questions were raised as to whether it was North West Radio and the ID was mis heard. But one question in the favour of DCR?? Why would Radio North West need to test anything. They were heard on 1615v on a regular basis. It is presently unknown if DCR was also in Letterkenny, like their mid 1980's namesake, or if their location was Donegal Town. An audio clip below suggests Donegal Town, as there are adverts for that area.

Click for the longer recording of DCR from that date complete with ads in Donegal Town, suggesting that the location was around that area, rather than Letterkenny, location of the station of the 80's with the same name.

DCR TEST TRANSMISSION 1615 - On an obscure Wednesday night, 30th July 1980, Radio North West from Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim was heard as it was on a regular basis, around 1615kHz. It was heard around 2100, but at 2230GMT a stronger signal was noted on 1615, from Donegal Community Radio. The cassette wasn't running at the time sadly, but as you can hear from half of the test ann, signals were very strong. Can we assume this was the same station as 1410?? Was it another station?? It is so long ago, but it was recorded in the log book as a test transmission from Donegal Community Radio, ID as DONEGAL COMMUNITY RADIO, and not simply DCR. As can be heard from the tape, it seems to sign off after that announcement, otherwise it would be not the only recording of the elusive DCR test. We were never able to establish and contact with the station operators of either Radio Donegal, or DCR.
