Radio Ronda was a relatively short lived station operated by Bert Williams in the early 1980's and apparently was a different operation to one heard way back around 1970 on 236m. After a teasing announcement by Bert on Radio Elenore at Christmas 1981, where he talked about a new station, broadcasts of Radio Ronda commenced in January 1982 on 1125kHz / 266m. According to Bert on the first recording below, Radio Ronda was started by himself and Jim Brown. After intitially operating with a full compliment of deejays on a Saturday, Sunday's were also promised, but after a few weeks it soon became 'The Ronda Jukebox' with mainly continuous oldies and seemed to be operated solely by Bert himself. It was also later monitored on 1116kHz, perhaps the move was due to the strong signal from Radio Carousel in Dundalk, which had recently moved to 1125kHz from 1134kHz.

1982_01_09_sat_ronda_1125am_1706-1751_bertwilliams-EM197.mp3 New Sep 2024 Bert Williams with a 'guest appearance' on Saturday 9th January 1982, the second week of broadcasting from Radio Ronda.  The broadcast quality wasn't the best, as commented on by Jim Brown, and being mid-winter there is also some co-channel foreign interference on 1125kHz. Also unfortunately the microphone is a little low, so the local tv interference is evident as Bert speaks. The recording is by kind courtesy of Eric Monaghan.

1982_02_06_sat_ronda_1125am_1140-1158_stevegray_airchecks-gh385.mp3 New Sep 2024 This is the first of several recordings of Radio Ronda from Saturday 6th February 1982. They were recorded from 1125kHz on the move whilst travelling around Merseyside. This signal on this initial tape is a bit poor and was heard at the extreme edge of the station's reception area where Radio Carousel can be heard underneath, and the first few minutes features a very crackly and muffled Steve Gray. After some 'dead-air' Steve was heard up to mid-day and said he would be back at 3pm.

1982_02_06_sat_ronda_1125am_1337-1520_paulrogers_philweston_stevegray-gh385.mp3 New Sep 2024 The last part of the Paul Rogers show is followed by an hour of Phil Weston between 2pm and 3pm. At 3pm Steve Gray returns for an hour of rock music (this time with better reception).  Again all recorded on the move in the car around Merseyside from 1125kHz, but the signal good on this section.

There is some slight crackling and fading on this section as the car starts to move around the primary signal area.

1982_04_24_sat_ronda_jukebox_1116am_ann_266m_airchecks_signoff_bert_williams_gh391.mp3 New Apr 2021 Airchecks of Bert Williams from Saturday 24th April 1982 after the station had been renamed 'The Ronda Jukebox'. Recorded near Blackpool from 1116kHz where there was a lot of hum and co-channel interference, possibly from BBC Radio Derby. The change to 1116kHz was probably due to the strong signal from Radio Carousel in Dundalk, which had recently changed to 1125kHz. Dundalk is a straight sea path from Merseyside, hence the strong signal of Carousel on the Merseyside coast. Bert comments on the issues with landbased pirate scene. Our tape ran out during the closedown, hence the quality difference at the end.
