Radio 242 began operating in late 1976 on 1241kHz following the first Tower 236 overnight broadcasts. It broadcast during the winter months, always October to March.  Dave Simpson recalls it as being a fun station to be on, and they would occasionally change name (sometimes to Radio 236) or wavelength in order to confuse the GPO. By late 1979 deejays on the station, John Dwyer, Mike Stand and Carl England would be involved along with Bert Williams in the start of the famous Merseyland Alterative Radio in a first for a free radio station and broadcast an unprecedented 30 hours a weekend using high power.

1976_12_00_radio242_1241am_0000-0047_carlengland-ds.mp3 New Apr 2023 A recording of Carl England on Radio 242 from a late night in December 1976.  The recording starts around midnight and there are plenty of home made jingles making the programme sound exciting. Carl gives an address in Formby for listener tapes, and also mentions Mike Stand and John Dwyer.  All three would later be on the famous Merseyland Alternative Radio when it started in 1979. This recording is by kind courtesy of Dave Simpson (aka Carl England). 43MB
