BIG
D AUTOMATED Frequency - 1116kHz, 273m By the beginning of 1982, Big D Radio was no longer operating as a conventional station with live deejays, as owner James Dillon had decided to experiment with Big D Radio as an automated service. This consisted of non-stop music with a handful of robotic sounding inserts announcing the station as 'Big D Automated'. Little advertising was heard after this stage and eventually the station disappeared in late 1982. 'Big D Automated' may well have been years ahead of its time, as today, many Dublin radio stations are now completely automatic, and most others are fitted with some sort of automated equipment for use at certain times of the day. The
photographs below of 'Big D Automated' in its latter days, were kindly
supplied by Miles Johnston, and were taken on 30th August 1982. |
