PHOTOS FROM A 1981 VISIT TO BOYNESIDE RADIO: Back in 1981, during our first tour of the Irish pirates, Boyneside Radio was the first station we called in on. It was only when we reached the area near Drogheda that we realised that Boyneside Radio was still on the air. The big MW transmitter on 1305 that was heard in the UK, was carrying Community Radio Drogheda.

Left: Gary outside the Boyneside Radio studios, in Mill Lane, just off Trinity Street.

Right: Simon outside the station, with some strange colouring!!! Pity we didn't have the cameras back then that we have nowadays .

Left: The old site at Donnachys Mill, on the banks of the historical River Boyne. Right: Daire Nelson on air at Boyneside Radio 1981/2. (Prounounced like DARA)

During a break from the station while waiting for Eric Vaughn to finish his morning programme, we went for a bite to eat at the King's Cafe, quite near the station. Boyneside Radio was p[laying on the radio in the cafe.

Left: The view looking up Mill Lane, with the studio on the left, towards Trinity Street. There was a little pub a few doors up.

A couple of shots of us guys outside the Boyneside Radio studios. Gary's green car is seen on the right hand image.

Left: The first non UK standard transmitter we ever saw, built out the way, rather than up! This was the one which could barely be heard below the aerial!

Right: Gary, Simon, Eric Vaughn and Ian ouside the old Donnaghys Mill, where the MW transmitter was housed, and where the studio was at one time. Apparantley they had been broadcasting from the top floor during a raid, but the department could not gain access to the studio to close them down!!

Left: The amazing view from the 98.1 site at Boyneside Radio, looking South towards Dublin. This was Eabon McDonnel's house, just North of Drogheda. No wonder the 98.1 FM signal from Boyneside Radio was heard in Dublin. At one stage, I think we were told that a UHF link was used to link to the Dublin FM transmitter from this site.
