Radio City 1981 visit

RADIO CITY DUBLIN, usually announced as 257m, possibly grew out of an earlier station called East Coast Radio on 262m which broadcast in early 1979. Radio City was first heard in the UK on around 1145kHz in late 1979. By early 1980 Radio City had moved onto the vacant spot left when ARD closed in the early hours of New Year 1979-80. However when ARD re-appeared as Radio 257, Radio City moved up to the mid-channel frequency of 1165kHz. When Radio 257 again ceased broadcasting, by June 1982 Radio City moved to the slightly lower, but on-channel 1161kHz. City were heard well in Scotland during the summer months, but by late 1981 ILR activity blocked reception. It is thought they ceased broadcasting around Christmas 1982, as our last recording was November 1982, and by April 1983, Radio Dublin had occupied the adjacent frequency of 1152kHz with their Channel 2 service.  The station never ventured onto FM as far as we are aware.

Radio City was a major station in Dublin in the early years, but surprisingly we have no stickers or any other promotional material in our archive. Luckily, though we do have a few photographs.

It was a compact studio and difficult to take photos.

The famous Red Corner shop in August 1981. The shop supported the early Dublin pirates with their loud commercials, including on Radio City. There is no real reason why the image is included with Radio City, except the image gallery for this station has only a few snaps anyway!!

The studio had a different layout compared
to our August 1981 visit.

Radio City in the early afternoon of Wednesday 23rd July 1980 as received in Leeds on 1165kHz. Suprisingly at this time in 1980, Radio City had probably the strongest, although highly modulated, signal received from Ireland in Leeds, although on this recording there was some crackling. Maybe it was due to its mid-channel location. It was the days before Sunshine Radio and the others station which used high power.  Radio City always had that high modulation level which could sound distorted at times.  We are not sure of the deejay on this early afternoon recording and unfortunately the microphone levels are also a bit low. There are quite a few adverts from Tony Allen.

Radio City breakfast show with Stuart Young.  Recorded near Dun Laoighaire from 1165kHz.  Radio City always had high modulation levels giving a distorted sound on some radios.  The frequency was also mid-channel, which caused some issues at distance during the late evening, but also meant it could be heard a long way off.
