Breffni Radio commenced broadcasts in December 1984 and originally announced as Breffni Community Radio, but due to a larger coverage area, by 1988 referred to itself as Breffni Regional Radio. Breffni Radio was well known as having a very very strong second harmonic for a time on 2340kHz, twice 1170. They were included in the AUK frequency list dated May 1985, but in the January 1986 list it is on 1161, apparently to avoid Winter interference on 1170kHz. By July 86 it was again on 1170. The Anoraks UK list of October 1987 had Breffni Radio listed on 1170, while by July 1988 it was listed as 657kHz, where they remained till closedown at the end of 1988. The frequency of 657kHz covered their listening area very well, but was difficult to hear in the UK due to BBC Radio Wales and BLB in Bray on the same channel. After an unsuccessful license application, Breffni made a brief return to the airwaves on 657kHz in November 1989, but was raided after about three weeks after which it was never heard again. Breffni Central Radio was an offshoot based in Longford in 1985 and 1986, and broadcasting on 1035kHz. Channel 2 was a separate FM outlet on 95.6MHz in the Kilnaleck area, and Galtee Regional Radio in Limerick was also part of the Breffni empire.(792kHz) Further detailed history of Breffni Radio compiled by Sean Brady can be read at radiowaves.fm Below is probably just some of the promotional material for Breffni Radio. Also, click the link below for some photos of the station. |
