PIRATES A / Z

Atlantic Sound began transmitting to the Galway area during late 1983 and was started by Alan Russell who was involved with the original Capital Radio in Dublin. Initially they broadcast on 1107kHz, announced as a wavelength of 273m. In 1984 they also added an FM outlet around 99.1MHz. The above ratecard is our only piece of memorabilia promoting that early wavelength, although there was also a poster produced around that time (see detailed station history at pirate.ie). During the summer of 1984, around the time that Don Stevens and Keith York (ex South Coast Radio, Cork) become involved, the station changed its logo and at the same time moved the AM frequency to 1026kHz. There were also two FM outlets on 99.2MHz and 95.4MHz. On a visit to the station in October 1984, Atlantic Sound was announcing another change in AM frequency, this time to 846kHz. It is not known whether this ever happened, as in the early part of 1985, a new station WLS Music Radio appeared on this very frequency with several of the former Atlantic Sound staff. Atlantic Sound was believed last heard during June 1985. |

Sadly there was no presenter on at the time, but spread though the continuous music there were some adverts and jingles mentioning Galway, 1107kHz and 273 metres. |

The format of the station had changed by this time, seemingly after the arrival of several staff from the recently defunct South Coast Radio in Cork. Atlantic Sound had changed their AM outlet to 1026kHz by this time, but were advertising a future move to 846kHz. |

Mainly continuous music, adverts and jingles, again, the name of the presenter is not known. Recorded from 95.4MHz in mono. This tape had a lot of dropouts, especially towards the end, so the audio levels are a little variable. |

| 1984_12_09_mon_atlantic_sound_1026am_1430-1516_seancostello_keithyork-ai_via_ib.mp3 New Oct 2021 | A recording of the station during a week of raising money for the '1026 Mayors Appeal'. Sean Costello starts off the recording with Laura Landers reading the news at 3pm after a bit of dead air. Keith York follows after the 3pm news. We are not sure whether this recording was made from AM or FM, but the audio distortion sounds like it may have been done from 1026kHz AM, close to the transmitter. |
